Social media: Latest recruitment tool used by hotel chains to reach out with job openings

MUMBAI: If you want a job in one of the big international hotel chains and in the unlikely event that you’re not on Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn, better sign up for an account.
Social media is the latest recruitment tool being used by leading chains to reach out to young people and widen the search throughout the country.

Hotel chains such as Marriott, Intercontinental, Hyatt, Accor and Starwood say it also helps quicken the process of recruitment. Marriott recently launched its ‘Marriott Jobs and Careers’ Facebook page for the Indian market, which already has more than 1.1 million likes.

The chain has formed an ‘India Talent Community Crew’ which keeps the career pages active with job openings and ongoing employee initiatives at hotels. A job opening posted on the group for its upcoming property in Bilaspur got more than 400 responses within days.

“Now we have people from 30-40 per cent more geographies responding to our job posts, which widens the spectrum of our talent search,” said Gurmeet Singh, Indian subcontinent area director for human resources at Marriott International.

Social media has brought down the time taken for recruitment from five weeks to around three to four weeks, he said. Ashwin Shirali, regional director of human resources at Accor India, agreed.

“We have been able to reduce recruitment lead time by as much as 50 per cent for many positions and this spells huge benefit especially while sourcing senior positions,” he said. Accor Jobs, the online careers page, has a social media presence spanning Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest.

The job sites of hotel chains are busy with photographs and updates of employee activities, videos featuring brands and brand initiatives, job vacancies in the region, information on applying for jobs, career paths available within the group, success stories of team members, updates on various HR initiatives covering reward and recognition, employee engagement etc.
